Yes, you can put sea moss in your coffee. It dissolves into a hot drink without much fuss, the taste is far milder than most people expect, and for a lot of people the morning cup is the easiest place to build a sea moss habit, because the coffee is getting made anyway.

There are a few ways to do it, and they are not all equal. Here is what actually happens in the cup, how to do it with gel, powder or capsules, and the simplest way of all.

What happens when you add sea moss to hot coffee

Sea moss contains a natural soluble fibre called mucilage, the same thing that makes the gel gloopy. In a hot drink, a small amount of it dissolves and adds a slightly fuller, silkier body, a little like what oat milk does. Use too much and the texture becomes noticeable, so start small.

On taste, a teaspoon or so of properly prepared sea moss in a cup of coffee is close to undetectable. The coffee is doing most of the talking. The "tastes like the sea" reputation comes from eating gel neat by the spoonful, not from a spoonful stirred into a strong, hot drink.

Three ways to add sea moss to your coffee

Sea moss gel. Stir 1 to 2 teaspoons into your cup and mix well, or blend it in for a smoother, almost frothy result. Gel is the trickiest of the three in coffee because it can sit in soft lumps if you only give it a lazy stir. It also lives in the fridge and lasts around three weeks, so it suits people who already keep gel for smoothies.

Sea moss powder. Whisk a small amount into the coffee, or stir it into the grounds or instant coffee before you add water. Powder disperses more easily than gel and keeps in the cupboard.

Sea moss capsules. Twist one open and empty it in, then stir. This works, though capsules are really designed to be swallowed, so most capsule people just take them with their coffee rather than in it.

Whichever you choose, keep to the usual daily amount of sea moss, 1 to 2 tablespoons of gel or 1 to 2 capsules per day in total. Sea moss is naturally rich in iodine, so adding it to your coffee should replace how you were taking it, not stack on top.

The simplest way: coffee with the sea moss already in it

If the honest answer is that you will not keep up the stirring and whisking, there is a version where the work is already done. Our Sea Moss Infused Mushroom Coffee blends organic fair trade arabica with wildcrafted St Lucia sea moss, 100% organic fruiting bodies of chaga, lion's mane and cordyceps, plus ashwagandha and maca.

One scoop, hot water, done. It lives in the cupboard, needs no fridge and no blender, tastes like a smooth coffee rather than a seaweed experiment, and works out at 44p a cup across its 60 servings. If you have ever started a jar of gel with good intentions and binned half of it, this is the format that survives real mornings.

    Frequently asked questions

Does sea moss change the taste of coffee?

    +
Barely, in small amounts. A teaspoon of gel or a light dusting of powder is close to undetectable behind the flavour of the coffee itself. Larger amounts add body before they add taste, so if you notice anything first it will be a silkier texture, not a flavour.

Is sea moss coffee the same as mushroom coffee?

    +
Not quite. Mushroom coffee is coffee blended with mushrooms such as chaga, lion's mane or cordyceps. Sea moss coffee adds sea moss as well. Our blend combines both in one scoop, which is unusual, as most mushroom coffees contain no sea moss at all.

Can I use sea moss gel in hot drinks or does it need to be cold?

    +
Hot drinks are fine. Sea moss has been simmered into warm drinks and dishes across the Caribbean for generations, so a hot coffee is nothing it cannot handle. Stir or blend well so the gel disperses evenly rather than sitting at the bottom of the cup.
